Open Letters

to the girl about to post a selfie

Hey girl,

I bet you were feeling really good about yourself that day. Your hair was perfect. Your makeup was on point. You were loving your outfit. You happened to come across the most incredible lighting.

You probably took a ridiculous amount of photos before you finally decided that one was “good enough”. Then you spent a couple of hours deliberating over what to caption it, sending it to all of your best gal pals to get their stamp of approval, and waiting for the optimal time to post it. Once you do post it, you’ll spend a few hours refreshing your feed to see how many likes it is getting, how many comments of approval you’re receiving, and maybe if a “certain someone” has liked it.

Trust me, I’ve been there! We’ve all been there! In our selfie saturated society, this is the norm. But when was the last time you REALLY thought about the “WHY” in your selfie before you posted it?

Why do you want other people to see this photo?

Are you posting this in hopes of getting a confidence boost from the likes and comments?

Will you be disappointed if a certain person does not like it?

Does this photo honour God, through what you are wearing or the way you are posing?

Will you be embarrassed by this photo two years from now? Five years from now?

There is nothing wrong with the physical act of sharing a selfie. But it is the heart behind it. If you need to post that selfie in order to feel validated, that is a problem. Your worth does not need to come from outward things! You are worth so much more than the compliments you receive from a photo that took immense effort to produce. It is so easy to become focused on outward appearances and begin to become vain. It is so easy for it to become a stumbling block in our walks with Christ and our relationships with others.

Let me fill you in on a little secret: confident girls do not need to be validated by others. Confident girls know their worth in Christ and know that their true beauty comes from what is in their hearts. Confident girls do not need to post selfie after selfie to become confident. They are confident because they know that their beauty is defined by the Lord.

So. Before you post that selfie, take a look at your heart. If your intentions are pure, then go ahead, post it! But if even one of the questions  above raises a red flag, maybe its best left in your camera roll.

And don’t forget.

You are beautiful.

You are a daughter of the King.

You are so much more than outward appearances.

You are not defined by what others say about you.

Your worth is infinite.
