It’s that time of year again, and usually I’m pretty quiet about this but it has been on my heart to share, so here we are.
Growing up, my family never celebrated Halloween. I had a basic understanding as to why, but mostly just felt like I was missing out on something fun that everyone else got to participate in.
I’ll admit, I’ve dressed up for Halloween and I’ve had my fair share of curiosity for what it entails. I’ve participated in some of it’s activities.
But the older I get, the more I realize that I need to make my OWN opinions on these kinds of issues. How I’ll approach them in adulthood, how I’ll teach my kids about them one day. Halloween is one of those days that always feels weird on my conscience, so this year I’ve been doing a lot of studying on the topic to form my own view. So here is my stance, and why I will no longer celebrate Halloween.
First, the history.
Halloween originated as the Celtic festival Samhain. (Pronounced Sa-win.) This festival took place at night (note: darkness), and celebrated the end of harvest & the beginning of the darkest part of the year (Winter). It was believed that on this night the boundary between our world and the spirit world got thinner, so that spirits were able to cross into our world more easily. People would wear costumes as a way to disguise themselves from the spirits.
Halloween has been adopted by the satanic church as a very important holiday. A quick search into their calendar shows that it’s one of the four main holidays in their year. To people who are Satanists, it is a night of demonic rituals and practices. It is truly terrifying what happens in their community on that night. In fact, Anton LeVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, once said “I’m glad that Christian parents let their children worship the devil at least one night of the year.” If that quote isn’t enough of an eye opener itself..
Today’s culture has dressed Halloween up in cute costumes, and fun activities and made it look like it is innocent and even almost “cute”. It has been sanitized and turned into something family friendly. It’s hard to find anything wrong with wearing a princess or a Paw Patrol costume. But this is all a strategy of the enemy! If he can infiltrate our minds and make us think that it is harmless, he celebrates. Halloween desensitizes us to scary and dark things. It distorts God’s creation. Think about it! You can’t even go to Wal-Mart in the month of October without seeing giant witches or zombies or creepy dolls. There are countless houses decked out with skeletons and tombstones in their front yards. The more that we see these kinds of scary, gory things, the more that we become desensitized to them.
At it’s core, Halloween celebrates death, darkness, and evil. All of which Jesus CONQUERED! So why would we, as people of Christ, celebrate what He came to defeat? We are told to be children of Light when we come to Christ. There is evidence all throughout the Bible that God is LIGHT, and the opposite of light is darkness. Why support something that is opposite of our King?
If you are a Christian, I encourage you to do your own research! Look at the history. Look at how Halloween is advertised and celebrated and line it up with what the Bible says. I don’t say any of this to force my opinion on you, but rather to encourage you to look into it yourself on a deeper level.

- “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.” – III John 1:11
- “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:2
- “Abstain from every form of evil.” – I Thessalonians 5:22
- “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” – I Peter 5:8
- “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” – Ephesians 5:8-11
- “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” ” – John 8:12
- “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – John 1:5
