I put a poll on my Instagram story a little while ago asking if people would be interested in a blog series on what books I read during the month, and the overall consensus was yes! I am finally getting around to it. I’ve got three books on the list to talk about today, set up as mini reviews and my personal thoughts on the books. I will also link each book on Amazon, if you click their titles. So let’s get to it! 🙂
The Magnolia Story | Chip and Joanna Gaines
I absolutely loved this book. Chip and Joanna Gaines have always been my favourite celebrity couple, and this book just solidified that choice! It is their story of how they got to where they are, and you can tell in every page that they are very genuine people. They feel real. Their story is beautiful and their marriage is beautiful and there is so much evidence of the Lord’s hand in their lives sprinkled in everything they do! If you are already a fan of Joanna and Magnolia, I highly recommend reading this book as it provides the background story of everything they are now! And it also left me feeling so inspired. It’s just a really cute book.
The German Midwife | Mandy Robotham
I’m not quite finished this book yet, but so far I really enjoy it. It’s a fiction novel set in Germany in the heat of World War II, and follows a young girl in a concentration camp who is trying her best to help pregnant mothers and newborns to stay alive. She then is assigned the new task of being Eva Braun’s midwife, and is swept away from the camp to perform her new duties. I bought this book because I really enjoyed The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and books about WWII in general, and I haven’t been disappointed. They are just interesting reads. Horrible and sad reads, but still interesting, if that makes sense? They are powerful and they make you think. For example, it hadn’t really occurred to me that there would be women in the concentration camps who were pregnant. Or who had newborns. So this book has really put that perspective into my mind. If you also enjoy fiction books of this genre, this is a very compelling read.
Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream | David Platt
This is one of those books that leaves you feeling convicted and asking the question “now, how do I respond to this?” You can tell that Platt is very passionate about every argument that he provides. The book explores how many North Americans can get too comfortable in their daily lives, and forget how Jesus really commanded His followers to live. The reader is asked to contemplate what Jesus really means to them, and if we are willing to give up everything for Him. There are many stories of churches in other parts of the world where it is not so “easy” to follow the Lord. Many great arguments are brought forward, and it has inspired me to look at the way I live, and how I can better live for Christ rather than for myself. It is an easy book to read and understand, making it fairly quick to get through. Although there are a few parts here and there where I don’t totally agree with his opinions, for the most part this book is a very valuable one to read. And a good reminder to Christians of how important it is to spread the gospel to people!
